Why your clients cannot find you (and where they go instead)

Word of mouth still works. It just ends with a search now — and that search happens with or without you.

The recommendation still happens the old way. Someone needs a plumber, an accountant, a physiotherapist; a friend gives them a name. What has changed is the next thirty seconds: before calling, they type the name into a phone. That search happens with or without you. The only question is what it finds.

What actually shows up

Try it with your own name and trade. For most independents the result is one of three things:

  • Nothing you control. A directory listing scraped years ago, with an old phone number or a predecessor's address. The visitor does not know it is stale — they know it did not answer.
  • A competitor. Not because they are better, but because they are findable. Search engines rank what exists; they cannot rank your reputation.
  • A social profile last updated two summers ago. Which reads, fairly or not, as «maybe no longer in business».

None of these lose you the client loudly. There is no bounced call, no complaint. The person simply dials the next name — which is why this is the easiest leak in a business to never notice.

The test that takes one minute

Search your name plus your town, on your phone, in a private window (so your own history does not flatter the result). Ask three questions of what you see: is it current, is it mine, and can someone act on it — call, write, book — without detective work? Three yes answers and you can stop reading.

Fixing it, in order of effort

The fix is not «be everywhere». It is one page you own, saying what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you — under an address with your name on it. That is the page the search finds, the page the directory listing can point to, the page a friend can forward. Everything else (a Google Business profile, social accounts) works better when it has that page to link to, and worse when it has to replace it.

This is the problem this platform exists to solve: a site under yourname.names.legal, online in an evening, that answers the search your next client is already making.
